Prescription Collection and Delivery Service Being Trialled

A new service is being trialled enabling people to use the Isle of Man Post Office to collect and deliver their prescriptions for free.

Prescription medication can be ordered in the normal way – online via Patient Access, or by dropping a prescription slip to a pharmacy – which can then be collected by the Isle of Man Post Office for delivery direct to a home address.

Delivery is convenient, with medications collected from the pharmacy and then dropped off at the door.  They’re also safe, with contactless delivery and tracking.  And they’re confidential, with only the name and address visible to postal workers.

Minister for Health and Social Care, David Ashford MHK, said: “This is a positive development that will help getting prescription medication simpler and more convenient.  It will also be especially helpful to vulnerable groups given the current situation with coronavirus.”

Three branches of Lloyds Pharmacy are taking part in the 12 week trial: Anagh Coar, Shoprite Victoria Road, and Village Walk Onchan.  Customers will be asked if they wish to take up the offer of the delivery service.

The vast majority of medicines are eligible for the collection and delivery service, with just a handful of exceptions: a small number of controlled drugs, cold chain medication, and some dietary supplements.

Processing a request through to delivery can take from five to seven days, so the service should not be used for urgent requests.  Those requesting repeat medications should make sure they have at least a seven day supply at home whilst they await delivery.

Noel Travis, Interim General Manager for Mails, said: “The Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to be part of the trial to deliver prescriptions to some of the most vulnerable in our community on behalf of some of our community pharmacies.

“We are very proud of our trusted position and happy to help those who need it most at this time, alongside our regular services.”

The public is reminded only to order the medication they need for up to one month ahead.

The Isle of Man Post Office is unable to accept medications from people’s homes for return to pharmacies for safe disposal.
