Post Office deploys its own ICT infrastructure

Isle of Man Post Office has successfully completed a major project to separate its information communication technology (ICT) infrastructure from the Government's network, in a bid to give the business more e-commerce freedom.

Isle of Man Post Office was previously part of the Isle of Man Government's ICT infrastructure, using their platform for its core services.

Over the past 10 years Isle of Man Post Office has needed to operate a separate independent network for its commercially confidential clients and during this time, it has significantly developed and grown its in-house ICT experience and capability. This is demonstrated by its digitally-orientated IMS division which has worked hard to achieve the internationally recognised standards ISO 27001 and 9001 for data security and quality management respectively and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) for businesses that handle cardholder information.

Isle of Man Post Office is a fully commercial arm of government and the business continues to progress its diversification strategy. This milestone to migrate from the government's ICT network is a huge step forward in enabling the business to grow further in its objective to generate new revenues to sustain the future of Isle of Man Post Office, against a backdrop of falling traditional business.

Mike Kelly, Chief Executive, Isle of Man Post Office said:

"It was imperative we progressed to having our own ICT network. We needed the freedom to service business opportunities with ICT solutions that fit the needs and requirements of the Post Office and our clients. By managing our own network, domain and telephony services we have the ability to fully implement our commercial ICT strategy. The separation of the ICT infrastructure was a key part of Isle of Man Post Office's business plan, allowing us to grow our commercial activities and attract new business off-Island in the ever-changing postal communications industry.

Following a full tender process overseen by the Treasury, Manx Telecom was selected to provide the managed network services offering a tier two data centre – fully resilient and with a 24-hour service."

Mike added:

"We believe the solution provided by Manx Telecom represents state of the art development and value for money. This project has been a major undertaking and it's testament to our in-house team that we have had the capacity to handle such a successful project on time and on budget. The migration is a key milestone for Isle of Man Post Office in terms of our e-business strategy, it's the foundation. Now we have separated we can develop other products and services online for customers both on and off the Island and our first project will be a brand new Isle of Man Post Office website."

Bob Fennell, Information Systems Manager, Isle of Man Post Office said:

"I would like to thank the technical teams of Isle of Man Post Office, Manx Telecom and Argon Technologies for their hard work and dedication in ensuring a smooth changeover onto a dedicated Post Office ICT network. The two teams have worked very well together showing excellent teamwork by both businesses. It's been a massive undertaking and because of the collaborative team of skilled individuals the project has been able to be completed successfully."
