Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) is making some changes to its Island-wide collection times from post boxes as part of a business efficiency project for the division of Letters & Parcels.
Currently many of the Island's post boxes located in residential areas have collections twice daily at 6am and 5pm, while rural areas have one collection per day at varied times. All mail that is collected from post boxes before 6am destined for Isle of Man addresses is delivered the same working day, while any mail posted after this time is either delivered the next day for local delivery or dispatched off-Island on IOMPO's dedicated mail plane, five days a week.
For the past six months and using data from new mobile hand-held technology used by postal staff, IOMPO has been monitoring the volume of mail posted in each of its post boxes. The results show that for the majority of 6am collections between Tuesday and Saturday, approximately two thirds of the boxes are either empty or contain less than five items when they are emptied. This data has provided IOMPO with the opportunity to review processes and efficiencies for this service with little customer impact.
As a result, IOMPO will be reducing the frequency of its 6am collections Tuesday to Saturday, whilst maintaining a collection of all 6am post boxes on Mondays due to the volumes of mail received from these post boxes on this day.
No post boxes will be removed from their current location.
Post boxes that will continue to operate 6am collections Monday-Saturday will be as follows:
1. Postal Headquarters/Douglas Delivery Office, Spring Valley, Braddan
2. Main Road, Onchan Post Office
3. Northern Delivery Office, Ramsey
4. Kirk Michael Post Office
5. Peel Post Office
6. Shoprite, Derby Road, Peel
7. Southern Delivery Office, Ballasalla
8. Castletown Post Office
9. Port Erin Post Office
10. Main Road, Crosby Post Box
11. Laxey Post Office
In conjunction with this change, IOMPO will be launching some enhanced functionality to its iompost.com website to provide customers with an easy way to look-up where their nearest post box is located and its associated collection times. This new service complements IOMPO's existing offering to customers to ensure the sending and receiving of mail is convenient and easy.
The post box volumes will continue to be monitored and where relevant, further changes may be made in the future which will be notified to customers in advance of taking effect.
The implementation of the reduced collection service from post boxes and the new facilities online will come into effect from the end of October and will enable IOMPO to reduce its carbon emissions by approximately 21kg per year and align itself with some of the Government SAVE initiatives to reduce its operational costs and improve business efficiency, while introducing simple messaging to customers with the website enhancement.
