Mail Van 4 is one of two covered goods vans built in 1894 by G. F. Milnes and was used to carry bagged mail between Douglas and Ramsey, a daily service which was to end in 1975. The van has recently undergone complete cosmetic restoration and was unveiled for the first time by Hon. Howard Quayle MHK in the presence of Hon. Steve Rodan and IOMPO's Chairman Ms Julie Edge MHK. The restoration was a joint venture between the Manx Electric Railway, Isle of Man Post Office and countless hours of dedication by volunteers who have carried out the work to an exacting standard.
The restoration coincided perfectly with the launch of IOMPO's postal tribute, including the MER125 Prestige Booklet which celebrates the postal heritage of 'Mail on the Rails' and tells the story of the Railway Letter Service. To make this fascinating aspect of the MER125 history more widely known, history boards were fixed to both the interior and exterior of Mail Van 4.
