The Isle of Man 2023 Jurassic Britain 50p coin collection
In 1823 Mary Anning discovered the complete skeleton of a Plesiosaurus, the first to ever be found. It caused a sensation. Anning’s discoveries became key evidence for extinction and played a key role in a new discipline now known as palaeontology.
Mary’s legacy lives on along the rugged Jurassic Coast – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site – where scientists, amateurs and adventurous children alike gather to hunt for the next big find.
The Jurassic Britain coin designs feature five animals from the Jurassic era or found along the Jurassic Coast. The designs show both the living animal and the skeleton, giving the fossil view along with the artist interpretation of the animal.
