On Thursday 25th June, Isle of Man Post Office in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure's Public Transport Divistion, held a special gathering at the Bungalow & Snaefell summit as part of the celebrations for the Snaefell Mountain Railway’s 125th Anniversary.
The event marked the launch date of a commemorative stamp issue from Isle of Man Post Office and a newly released book titled ‘Snaefell: A Mountain and a Railway’ by author and railway expert Andrew Scarffe. Andrew also wrote the issue text for the products featured in the ‘125th Anniversary of the Snaefell Mountain Railway’ stamp collection.
To mark the occasion, Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office and Member of the Department of Infrastructure Julie Edge MHK, was joined by Director of Transport Services Ian Longworth, author Andrew Scarffe and staff from Isle of Man Railways who watched as Tram Number 1 was driven up to the Bungalow in one of its first outings since March. 125 First Day Covers were carried on board the tram and signed at the Summit by Andrew Scarffe, to now be made available as a set with Andrew’s book, creating a very special product for collectors to mark this special anniversary.
Ian Longworth, Director of Transport Services said ‘This event has been a great opportunity to celebrate the Island’s heritage railways, something which is so important as a way of stimulating ongoing use by both locals and tourists’.
